The Contrarian Voice

As a kid my parents liked to remind me I was 'argumentative.' Entangling myself in frivolous disputes about just about everything.

I had a hard time accepting the status quo. If something didn't sound right, look right, feel right, I'd say something.

This way of moving in the world sometimes isn't received well. So we learn diplomacy, tempering our speech without compromising our values. We learn to listen a little more deeply before interjecting with our own opinions and perspectives.

In time we discover when the contrarian voice wells up from inside us, chances are the person espousing the opposing position is already in conflict with themselves, though perhaps without awareness.

Some people cling to a broken model of the world. A system, rhetoric, religion that binds them, stifling their ability to live in harmony with themselves and others. The contrarian voice calls us forward to a new way of being, to greater freedom, connection, joy and love.

Our role isn't always to recruit new companions to the journey. It's to find companions already on the road.
